Hemp: It's Not Just For Smoking!

The word hemp elicits a variety of responses. From utter confusion to a wink-wink, nudge-nudge and the imagining of Dum Maro Dum playing in the background to a, “yeah, so what?” the plant has come a long way baby!

Hemp is gradually gaining traction as a material that suffers less wear and tear, is durable, comfortable to wear and holds its shape for years on end whereas cotton has a tendency to shrink. 

It also retains colours better, resists bacterial growth and is 4x as strong as cotton. Hemp also uses only 1/20th the amount of water as compared to regular cotton to grow and process and is far more eco-friendly from the word go!

Unlike many conventional crops, hemp grows quickly without the need for pesticides or herbicides, making it a low-impact agricultural crop. Its deep roots prevent soil erosion, enrich the soil, and absorb carbon dioxide, aiding in climate change mitigation. Hemp is versatile, providing eco-friendly alternatives for biodegradable plastics, textiles, paper, building materials, and biofuels.

However, due to the association with cannabis, the cultivation of the plant has been seriously hampered.
